Castell Dinas Bran

25th October 2023

What shall we do today? A phrase Mrs WH comes to proclaim on the odd occasion, leaving me in a little state of fluster as to what to bring to the table. Luckily, Mrs WH has an idea. Castell Dinas Bran, a location we have mentioned on a number of occasions but never had the impetuous to follow through, until today.

Car loaded with coats, boots and dogs, we were all set to go, well, almost. There was the question of where to park. Being retired hippies, it’s a question of cost i.e. we opt for free and wing it, hoping to find a spot in a lane close by. Arriving in Llangollen, we view our conquest, sitting on top of a hill, about 1,000 ft up.

The castle stands proud, above the Dee Valley and the busy town of Llangollen, with views for miles around. I believe it dates back to the 12th century Welsh princes of Powys.

I switch on my internal homing system in order to find the ideal parking location and it doesn’t take long to find the ideal spot, on a lay-by on Dinbren Road. Having successfully acquired our free parking, we embark straight into a climb before reaching the track and the calling of the castle, sitting majestically on its steep hill high above us. It’s a well-marked path leading to the castle, however, the climb to the top is not an easy one.

It's now that Mrs WH decides she is wearing too much and is declaring she can’t make it, however, the dogs have other ideas and coax us upwards. Finally, we make it to the summit and are rewarded with magnificent views across the beautiful Dee Valley below.
